Household responsibilities

by Wife 7. July 2008 04:41

My husband, Bryan, thinks our house is very disorganized. He feels that there is not any order or clear responsibility between the two of us. To help solve this issue, Bryan proposed that we divide up the household chores. His parents have always had clear responsibilities and I think he likes that.

Here is what Bryan volunteered to do, all in one ten minute conversation.

  • Laundry. He will do the wash and switch the loads as well as fold all of the laundry, including mine. All I have to do is keep the top of my dresser clean so that he can set the folded clothes on it.
  • Dishes. He volunteered to load and unload the dishwasher.
  • Kitchen. He will keep the kitchen clean, including after-meal cleanup, etc.
  • Everything outside the house except flowers, including:
    • Lawn mowing
    • Fertilizing
    • Trimming shrubs
    • Garage clean-up
    • Car washing and car maintenance
    • Exterior work
After his list of chores all I would have to do are the floors and bathrooms! He volunteered to do quite a lot of things. Unfortunately he did not remember all of it. The first night after this conversation I went to bed leaving the kitchen messing, thinking he would clean it up. After all, he said he would AND he was the one who wanted all of this order and responsibility. Well he goes upstairs and I remind him that there are clothes in the dryer to fold. And I pull out a book to read… At this point Bryan is a little frustrated and asks me what about the kitchen. I tell him that according to himself, that’s his responsibility! He does not remember that. I go through the list of things he volunteered to keep up around the house, and all he remembers is the laundry. I think it’s funny that he volunteered to so much yet doesn’t remember doing so! So much for just having to do the floors and bathrooms.
