The trials and tribulations of trying to close on a house

by Wife 15. January 2008 04:45

It's MUCH more difficult than it may seem!  Sure, we've signed a purchase agreement, had the house inspected, tested for radon, have a mortgage set to go, etc.  Apparently the seller's title company does not seem to be in quite the same hurry as us.  And the selling real estate agent is somehow clueless about asking for concessions.

What happened is this:  after our inspections we discovered that the cracks in the drywall may take more time and effort to fix than orginally thought, there is something weird going on the the two sump pumps in our basement, and our radon level is somewhat high and will probably need to be mitigated in the near future.  Seeing how these three things are quite pricey to repair, not to mention time consuming, we decided to ask for concessions.  We did not ask for the purchase price to change, per say.  But the seller's agent viewed this request as completely changing our offer (naturally, right?) and is just all sorts of shady at times.  He makes no sense.  He also accused us of changing the closing date!!

We were supposed to close today, but we still have not received the title work from the selling bank.  It's very frustrating - it is not hubby and I who've changed the close date!  I just hope we'll hear something on the title work and concessions today and be able to close by Friday.  But at this point, who knows what can happen.  I just know how much relief we'll feel when the deal is final.
